Hans Gyde Petersen (1862-1943) started as a sculptor, but, under the influence
of the Skagen painter P.S. Krøyer he took up painting. He was admitted
to The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts (Copenhagen) in 1882 where he
graduated in 1888. From early on Petersen was known for his large figure
paintings which were strongly influenced by the French naturalism of the
1870's and 1880's. Through his acquaintance with P.S. Kroyer he joined
the Royal Deer Garden Association of Painters in 1913 and specialized
in bringing a very high degree of precision into his works.
Petersen made several study tours abroad including a trip to Paris in
1895 and a series of trips to Italy between 1897-99. In 1925-26 he took
temporary residence in the USA. In recognition of his talent and work
he received numerous awards and scholarships, e.g. The Academy Award (1897-99!),
The Raben-Levetzau Prize in 1890-91, the Ancher Prize (1895) and The Eibeschütz'
Prize in 1896 and 1902.
n
1891 he debuted at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions in Copenhagen
and thereafter he exhibited in their official exhibitions almost continuously
until 1923. In 1913 he was affiliated to "Dyrehave-malerne" (The Royal
Deer Garden Association of Painters) and exhibited there until 1939. Also
in 1913 he became a member of the association of Deergarden painters.
Apart from this he exhibited at several other prominent exhibitions as
well as at many one-man exhibitions.
In November, 1995 Gyde Petersen's "Forest Reflections" (oil on canvas)
painting sold at Christie's London for $7,650.00. Also, "Peder S. Krøyer's
studio at Skagen 1905" sold for $7,560.00 14 November 1995 London Christies.
