Poul Friis Nybo (1869-1929) was born in Denmark went to the preparation
class at Kunstakademiet (the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts) in Copenhagen
in 1887 and continued his education at Zahrtmann's School from 1889-1892.
He made study tours to Scandinavia (Sweden in 1890 and Norway in 1891)
and to Berlin (1905) and Paris (1905 and 1907-08).
Nybo painted warm lamplight interiors, (with or without people)wintertime
landscapes, and motifs from overcast days, but also sunset moods, among
other things inspired by the north coast of Zealand. He traveled to Halland
(Sweden) together with the artists Joakim and Niels Skovgaard, Karl Jensen
and Albert Gottschalck. He also went to Berlin, Norway and studied in
Paris in 1905 and again in 1907-08. In his late years his health was not
very strong and this kept him from working.
He debuted at the esteemed Charlottenborg Spring Exhibition (Copenhagen)
in 1892, where he exhibited continuously until 1930. Additionally, he
was a frequent exhibitor at the most prominent exhibitions including;
The Artists Fall Exhibitions 1904-05 and 1907, Den Frie Udstilling (the
Free Exhibition), The Artists School of Study (founded by a group of the
famous "Skagenmalere": P.S. Kroyer, Lauritz Tuxen, Michael Ancher and
others)in 1896, and at the Paris Salon "Salonen" in 1908.
In recognition of his work, he received a number of scholarships and rewards,
among them The Academy Award in 1904, 1905, 1907. The Hielmstierne-Rosencrone
1903, Bielke 1903, and Raben-Levetzau in 1908 and 1917.
A Poul Friis Nyboe painting "At the Window" sold for $4,380 at Christie's,
London, in October 1996.
