Georg Emil Libert (1820-1908) studied at Kunstakademiet (the Academy of
Fine Arts) in Copenhagen and was a student of J.L. Lund. He traveled in
Europe, and became particularly influenced by the German landscapes around
Munich which had its outset in the golden age tradition. Many of the landscapes
painted by Libert on the Danish island of Bornholm bear witness to this
influence. The immensity of romantic Bornholm nature captivated Libert
who was honored when one of the cliffs at Helligdommen was named after
him.
He received a number of scholarships e.g. the Academy (Soedring's scholarship
and Ancher 1875) and exhibited at Charlottenborg for many years and in
"Kunstforeningen" (The Art Association), among others.
After his death his works were chosen for an exhibition with the theme
"The Golden Age Painters". His art is very sought-after and popular. Today,
works of his are represented at several museums in Denmark, the foremost
being Statens Museum for Kunst (The Danish National Gallery) and Thorvaldsens
Museum.
A George Emil Libert paintng "Ansicht des Heidelberger Schlosses Zwischen
der Molkenkur, der Stadt" sold for $11,240 at Sotheby s, Munich in June
1994. The gallery market for Libert paintings in the United States ranges
from $8,000.00 to $30,000.00.
