Bertha
Wegmann was born in Switzerland and studied art in Copenhagen, Munich,
Paris, and Florence . She received considerable recognition in Denmark
and in Europe for her portraits and genre subjects. She received drawing
and painting lessons from F.F. Helsted and H. Buntzen. Moreover, she was
a student of Wilhelm Lindenschmidt. Wegmann painted at first narrating
figure motifs, usually with a sentimental point, but also a number of
landscapes. Like her contemporaries she was interested in the modern French
art and from 1881 she mainly lived in Paris where she distinguished herself
at the Salon.
Wegmann made the greatest impressions as a portrait painter and must be
considered as one of the best of her time. She emphasized an energetic
characteristic and the dialog between the portrayed and the viewer. She
participated in the great exhibitions of her time including the 1893 Columbian
Exposition in Chicago as well as several other World Exhibitions.
Posthumously she has been exhibited at the Danish National Gallery, the
Art Society and Oeregaard Museum. She is represented at Soenderjylland,
Aarhus, Frederiksborg and Storstroem Art Museum, the Danish National Gallery,
Copenhagen University and at Frijsenborg.
Price example: She sold "A Mother and Daughter in an Interior" for $39,000
at Christie s, London in March 1986 (Lot 95, 44 1/8" by 36 3/8").
