Sophus Vermehren (1866-1950)was the most talented of Frederik Vermehren's
two sons, but unfortunately also the least productive. Sophus Vermehren
was taught to draw by his father (who was a professor at the Academy of
Fine Arts in Copenhagen) and finished his education at Teknisk Skole (the
Technical School) and at Kunstakademiet (the Academy of Fine Arts) in
Copenhagen. He never travelled but received the Neuhausen Prize along
with prizes from Serdin-Hansen, The Academy and Raben-Levetzau.
Sophus was a Charlottenborg painter but also exhibited at Kunstnerforeningen
af 18. November (the Artist Society of November 18th) and at Kunstnernes
Efteraarsudstilling (The Artists Fall Exhibition). In his genre and landscape
paintings one sees an influence from Julius Exner. He worked with the
folklore motifs, but tended to be more honest in his work than his brother.
Sophus Vermehren is represented at Statens Museum for Kunst (the Danish
National Gallery). A Sophus Vermehren painting "Interior with a young
girl showing her new dress, 1903" sold for $12,381 at auction in Copenhagen
in April 1990.
