monogram "M Th". Hans Michael Therkildsen (1850-1925) is a well-listed
Danish artist. He was educated at Kunstakademiet (the Academy of Fine
Arts) in Copenhagen and studied privately under Constantin Hansen. He
was also one of the first to study at Den Frie Studieskole (the Free Study
School) under L. Tuxen and F. Schwartz.
His preferred motifs were genre scenes and in the 1880s he developed scenes
where the interaction between humans and animals was emphasized. Michael
Therkildsen had a large audience among his contemporaries. He was especially
inspired by the animal painter C. Troyon, but he also found inspiration
on his journeys to France and Italy. He was a member of the academy's
board and he received a number of prizes for his works, e.g. Neuhausen's
prize in 1877, one from the academy in 1884, Thorvaldsen's prize in 1887,
the silver prize in Paris 1889 and a prize in Munich 1909.
M. Therkildsen exhibited at Charlottenborg, Kunstnerforeningen (the Artist
Society), Nordisk Kunstudstilling (Nordic Art Exhibition), the world exhibition
Paris 1889, International Kunstausstellung in Berlin 1891, Works by Danish
artists, London 1907, Espo. Internaz. Rome 1911, The Baltic Exhibition
in Malmo, just to mention some of his many exhibitions nationally and
abroad. His works are represented at Statens Museum for Kunst (the Danish
National Gallery), the Hirschsprung Collection and at art museums in north
Jutland, Funen and Horsens.
A Michael Therkildsen painting "The Critic in the Artist's Studio" sold
for $9,450 at Christie's, London in November 1995.
